Dr. Srabana Misra Bhagabaty, with more than 15 years’ experience is taking leadership in the field of cancer prevention and control. She is currently working as Professor (SO-G) and leading the Preventive Oncology Department of the Institute since 2012. She has expertise in leading, collaborations and teaming up, innovation, convening, organizing, resource mobilizing, conducting and monitoring programs and projects and handling administrative issues of the department. She is a teaching Faculty of BBCI Academia and Resource person at International, National, Regional and State level. She has work experiences as public health expert with UNICEF, CDC Atlanta, WHO and IPHA, ICMR, medical research council UK, Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases etc.
Dr. Srabana Misra Bhagabaty received many prestigious awards and recognitions for her outstanding contributions in the field of cancer and tobacco control. To name a few are:” World Health Organization (WHO) South East Asia Regional Director’s Special Recognition Award 2022 on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day”; “Health care Excellence Award 2019 :A News 18 initiative. Award presented by honourable Health Minister, Assam”; “Best oral paper presentation award” and “Certificate of Excellence” in “Global Cancer Summit-2015, “The NEURONE”, “Woman achiever-92.7big FM” etc.
Dr. Bhagabaty has experience of handling more than 10 major research projects in the Institute. She is the Principal Investigator of National Tobacco Quit line Services for 8 states of North East India, West Bengal and Orissa at BBCI (under Ministry Of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. Of India),Tobacco cessation centre, Regional PI for the multi centre Women empowerment –Cancer awareness nexus (WE CAN): (ICMR and Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases - Research Network supported). She is also a co-investigator in Multiple DAE, ICMR, and Tobacco free Kids drive Washington DC funded projects.
Dr. Srabana Misra Bhagabaty has initiated and carrying out currently multiple research works in the field of cancer prevention and control and many more tobacco research in collaboration with Ministry of Health and Family welfare Govt. of India and WHO. Dr. Bhagabaty initiated many certificate courses in the department under BBCI academia and is carrying out academic courses of observerships and internships in the department. She has multiple research papers published in reputed medical and scientific International journals in the fields of her expertise. She has contributed several chapters in textbooks and noteworthy to mention that a chapter on Tobacco in Assammese Encyclopeadia is being authored by Dr. Bhagabaty. She has been peer reviewing articles for reputed Medical Journals.
She took initiative and volunteered opening a free cancer screening clinic at BBCI in 2010 and since then running the clinic which was updated in 2022. She got letter of appreciation for her initiative by BBCI management. During Covid-19 pandemic BBCI authorities assigned her as the sole point of contact for all the employees of BBCI and was actively involved in planning and implementing strategies towards covid-19 control in the Institute. She also was in close collaboration with the state health authorities in facilitating vaccination of the employees and other beneficiaries in the Institute.
Dr. Srabana Misra Bhagabaty is actively involved in Anti-tobacco-advocacies (Bureaucrats/ VOTV/ NTCP/ Assam Govt./ Governor/ Policy Makers), Co-ordinated /collaborated the initiation of Regional Tobacco Quit line at BBCI with MOHFW and WHO. She has organised and conducted, more than 3500 community based cancer and tobacco awareness program and educational Institutional program, 85-Mass-media cancer and tobacco awareness programs, 222 training for health workers/ doctors/ grass root workers/ Masters of social work/ NGOs/ panchayats/ staff of TCCs under NTCP, trained up tobacco quit line at BBCI, has citation and sessions in more than 100 State, regional, national, international workshops, seminars and conferences attended and contributed as an expert in 20 National, state and regional Tobacco related policy/ strategy related meetings.
Dr. Srabana Misra Bhagabaty is a life member of Indian Public Health Association; Association of Oncologist of North East India; Founder member of Cancer Research Foundation, India; and Member of MUKTI: A joint forum for Tobacco Control, North East India; VOTV india; State level Coalition for Tobacco Control; Member of BBCI anti cast discrimination committee etc.
Dr. Srabana Misra Bhagabaty is WHO recommended expert in National consultation committee to develop Guidelines for tobacco control, Core-committee member-e-Learning Training on Tobacco Cessation for Dental Professionals, India, WHO sponsored-nominated delegate -2009 Global summit, and is a member in the Expert Committee for accelerating Tobacco Cessation Services in India under Government of India.
