DR. ANUPAM SARMA, MD, PhD, Professor and Head, Department of Oncopathology, Dr B. Borooah Cancer Institute, has a vast experience in the field of Oncopathology. As Oncopathologist, Dr Sarma demonstrated special interest in the field of Haematology, Cytopathology, Histopathology, Frozen section, Molecular Pathology, Immunohistochemistry & Flowcytometry.

 

Dr. Sarma was sent for training along with technician at Institute of Pathology (ICMR), New Delhi on 2006 and after coming back they helped in establishing the Immuno-histochemistry (IHC) laboratory in BBCI which became the pioneer institute of North-East India to start IHC and presently works with a panel of around 70 antibodies. In-situ hybridization (ISH) for the detection of Epstein-Barr virus in tissue sections has also been started in the department.

 

Blood Bank of BBCI was granted a valid license from Drug Controller General of India (CDSCO) in 2008 for whole blood. The license for blood components was granted in 2012. Dr Sarma has attended training on ‘Implementation of Quality Management System in Blood Bank’ organized by the National AIDS Control Organization at New Delhi. Recently Apheresis unit has been also started at blood bank of BBCI with a Transfusion medicine faculty and a Medical Officer.

 

Dr. Sarma was sent for training in the Haematopathology Laboratory of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai on 2010 and helped in establishing the haematopathology laboratory in BBCI and became the first institute to start flow-cytometry in North-East India. Dr Sarma also attended training on “Special course on Leukemia/Lymphoma Immunophenotyping” at BD Bioscienences Training Center, Gurgaon on 2011. Currently, ten-color flow cytometry is being done at the department laboratory for diagnostic immunophenotyping.

 

Dr. Sarma has attended training at Imperial College London, UK in low-cost microscopy with advanced capabilities including super-resolution and automated imaging for biomedical applications in histopathology for cancer diagnosis in year 2019. He has also visited the pathology department at Francis Crick Institute and at Hammersmith Hospital, London.

 

Dr Sarma has completed his Ph.D. in year 2020, from department of Bioengineering & Technology, Guwahati University. He has been taking part in various research projects as PI or Co-PI and has more than 60 indexed research publications/case reports in peer reviewed national and international journals. Dr Sarma is an author of 3 book chapters.

 

Under his leadership Medical Council of India (MCI) has recommended starting of DM Oncopathology at BBCI for two seats from 2020. Two years PG Fellowship Programme has benefited large numbers students of North East. Additionally, laboratory technician courses and many other certificate courses are conducted in the department. NABL has accredited the Haematology and Biochemistry sections in October, 2022. Dr Sarma has been also nominated as an assessor of pathology for medical colleges of India under NMC. Dr Sarma has participated as an External Examiner for DM (Oncopathology) examination at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, Karnataka on 24th & 25th August, 2022.

 

He has attended over 100 national/international conferences, workshops, symposia and meetings. He is also associated with organizing seminars & workshops in BBCI and has organized “National Seminar on Molecular Pathology of Cancer” as Organizing Secretary, CME on “Leukemia and Flowcytomery” as Organizing Secretary at Dept. of Pathology, BBCI. He was also involved as faculty and Jt. Organizing Secretary of “9th TCS Annual Event & Flow Cytometry Workshop on Flow applications in Basic, Applied and Clinical Biology, FABACTS 2016” organized jointly by IIT, Guwahati and BBCI.

 

A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Dr Sarma for sharing valuable knowledge as speaker in Symposium on “Molecular Biology Tools and its application in Biomedical Research” organized by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College, Barpeta on 2018. Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Dr Sarma for sharing valuable knowledge as speaker and offering training in Hands on Immunohistochemistry Workshop organized by Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh on 2021 and also helping to establish IHC Laboratory in Dept of Pathology, AMCH, Dibrugarh.

 

Dr Sarma received best paper award “An initial evaluation of malignant lymphoma with histopathology & immunohistochemistry" on XX Annual Conference of North-East Regional Chapter of IAPM, Guwahati. He was awarded 3rd prize in research publication at NERCON- 2022 held at GMCH auditorium, Guwahati.
